About Me:I am a first-generation Central New York native with over 12 years of teaching experience, including nearly a decade at the university level as an instructor of Spanish language, Hispanic culture, and world literature. I hold a PhD and MA in Spanish literature from Penn State University, an MA in Spanish from Middlebury College, and a BA in Spanish and Adolescent Education from St. John Fisher College. I am a passionate scholar-educator with additional interests in Life Design and Digital Humanities.
At Johns Hopkins University, I am Assistant Director and Life Design Educator for Students with International Perspectives. I am thrilled to have joined the Life Design Lab at Hopkins in F23 and look forward to supporting international students and those engaging in study abroad as they explore all of life’s possibilities and envision their future selves. This work draws on my previous experiences as a faculty member, academic advisor, and researcher as detailed below. |
My doctoral dissertation, Moving through Modern Spain (1888-1923): Revelatory Darkness as Critical Medium, studies how literary and artistic renditions of movement through space served modernist intellectuals as a vehicle for social critique in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, while emulating the unsettled and shifting essence of Spanish modernity. This project laid the foundation for my peer reviewed article entitled peer-reviewed article, “The Landscape of Pío Baroja’s Madrid: The Search for Meaning in La busca (1904)” (Cincinnati Romance Review, fall 2017), and my article, “‘¿Cómo no meter la pata en literatura?’: Darío de Regoyos as Author, Translator, and Critic in España Negra (1899)” (Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, fall 2022).
At Loyola University Maryland (2020-23), I taught Spanish Composition and Conversation (SN 201 D), Intermediate Spanish I & II (SN 103, SN 104), and Topics in Intercultural Communication: What Makes a Hero? (ML 100 D); at the University of Lynchburg (2019-20), I taught Elementary and Intermediate Spanish (SPAN 101, SPAN 102, SPAN 201); and at Penn State (2014-19), I taught Introduction to Hispanic Literature (SPAN 253W), and language courses in the Spanish Basic Language Program (SPAN 002 and SPAN 003) during regular and summer semesters. I was also a program co-director for Penn State's summer study abroad experience in Ronda Spain where I taught SPAN 253W (2017) and Spanish History through Art (SPAN 497, 2019). Before beginning my graduate studies, I taught high school and middle school Spanish in New York and Pennsylvania, and served as a graduation advocate and mentor for students in the Pittsburgh Public School District.
